President Prabowo Mourns Passing of Bishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Kupang

President Prabowo Subianto paid his respects to the late Bishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Kupang, Monsignor (Mgr) Petrus Turang, at the Jakarta Cathedral, on Friday, (04/04). The Head of State arrived at the Cathedral at 03:38 pm local time.

Upon his arrival at the Cathedral, President Prabowo was welcomed by the Bishop of the Archdiocese of Jakarta Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo, the Secretary General of the Archdiocese of Jakarta Fr. Adi Prasojo, Treasurer Team of the Indonesian Bishops’ Conference Lucia Lianddo, and President Director of PT. Pertamina (Persero) Simon Aloysius Mantiri.

After paying his condolences and having a conversation for a while, President Prabowo prayed for the deceased to be given the best place by the side of God Almighty.

“I came to pay my respect because I knew Monsignor Turang well. We met often, and we also have family ties. So, I think as fellow human beings, we give our respects. I express my condolences to all his family,” said President Prabowo in his press statement.

For the record, the late Mgr. Petrus Turang passed away at the age of 78 at 06.20 am this morning. He was known as a figure with strong principles.

“He was a good person, always thought positively, and he always worked for the common people. That’s what I know,” he said.

The body of Bishop Petrus was laid out at the Carolus Funeral Home in Jakarta today at 11.00 am local time. Afterwards, the deceased was taken to the Cathedral, Jakarta to be laid out at around 01.30 pm. The Requiem Mass will be held at 06.00 pm, led by the Archdiocese of Jakarta Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo and the Vatican Ambassador to Indonesia Nuncio Piero Pioppo.

The deceased is slated to be departed for Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Tangerang, Banten at 11.00 pm. The body will then be flown to Kupang City, East Nusa Tenggara Province to be buried on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.
