Press Statement of President of the Republic of Indonesia at Bilateral Meeting with Prime Minister of India during Prime Miniser’s State Visit to Indonesia at the Merdeka Palace, Special Capital Region of Jakarta July 07, 2026

Your Excellency Prime Minister of the Republic of India Narendra Modi,

Honorable Ministers and Delegates of both countries.

First and foremost, allow me to once again welcome Your Excellency Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Jakarta. This is such a great honor for me as the President of the Republic of Indonesia to welcome you in Indonesia, a country that has been a close friend of India for years. We share similar cultural and historical background. Therefore, this visit serves as a token of commitment for us to further foster our friendship and partnership.

Today, as the President of the Republic of Indonesia, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Your Excellency Narendra Modi for accepting the highest state honor of the Republic of Indonesia, Bintang Adipurna medal.

We express our gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for willing to accept this medal. It is conffered in recognition of his leadership and his significant contributions to strengthening Indonesia–India relations, elevating them to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership and his continuous efforts to enhance cooperation between Indonesia and India, as well as his support for various programs and projects that have contributed to Indonesia’s development.

Indonesia had also conferred the same medal to the first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru for his great role in strengthening Indonesia and India relations, and his contribution as one of the founders of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

The visit of Prime Minister Modi is a historic milestone. It also reflects the commitment of both countries to continue enhancing comprehensive strategic partnership through various concrete and mutually beneficial partnerships. We also conveyed our gratitude for India’s support for Indonesia’s full membership in BRICS.

Distinguished Guests,

Prime Minister Modi and I have conducted an intensive and productive future-oriented meeting, aiming to address several strategic issues that become the common interest of Indonesia and India.

On the political sector, we have agreed to further strengthen partnership by intensifying high-level visits, build stronger coordination for bilateral consultation, and enhance interinstitutional partnership, including the new established Think Tanks and Parliamentary Friendship Groups.

We also want to reaffirm our commitment to strengthen partnership in terrorism mitigation. Both countries have agreed to improve cooperation on the security sector through the Third India-Indonesia Security Dialogue.

As transnational security challenges continue to grow, we are committed to deepening cooperation on capacity building in emerging technologies, combating transnational crime, and developing digital infrastructure.

People’s mobility to other countries will increase as well due to improved connectivity. Therefore, I affirm my support to the development of seaport in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India, and the expansion and development of Sabang seaport in Aceh as the strategic hub connecting Sabang Island and India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Both countries consider cooperation on the economic sector as one of the main pillars for bilateral relations. For that reason, we are committed to enhance bilateral trade significantly by speeding up the discussion of the Indonesia-India Preferential Trade Agreement and reviewing the upgrading of the ASEAN–India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA).

In order to strengthen cooperation on the financial sector, we welcome the progress made in the discussions of the establishment of a Cross-Border QR Payment Linkage between Indonesia and India. This system is expected to improve transaction efficiency while enhancing the resilience of the financial sector. Amid the current global situation, we also encourage stronger cooperation in energy security, including the development of solar power projects as well as the exchange of technology and capacity-building in the field of nuclear technology.

Moving forward, we are committed to deepen our cooperation on the health sector and we plan to provide more opportunities for doctors, nurse, and medical personnel to increase their capacity.

We also welcome the restoration and conservation of the Prambanan Temple compounds, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as the designation of 2026–2027 as the Tagore–Dewantara Year for Indonesia–India cultural and educational diplomacy.

These various initiatives demonstrate the long-standing civilizational ties between Indonesia and India. At the same time, we are committed to strengthening cooperation on education, research and technology, culture, and people-to-people contact.

On the education sector, Prime Minister Modi and I support the establishment of Indian Institute of Management campus and the exploration of Indian Institute of Technology in Indonesia, as well as the effort to increase the number of Indonesian students in India. We believe these opportunities will be implemented soon and bring concrete benefits to the people of both countries.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Prime Minister Modi and I have exchanged our views on several regional and global issues. We will continue to support various efforts to promote world peace and stability, and to ensure that voices from the Global South are heard.

Within the region, Indonesia and India continue to commit to establish a free, open, and transparent Indo-Pacific region that is based on international laws and upholds ASEAN centrality. Both countries will keep supporting dialog and diplomacy and enforcement of international law to resolve conflicts in the Middle East in a peaceful manner.

Your Excellency Prime Minister Modi,

Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen,

I would like to once again extend the assurances of my highest consideration for Your Excellency’s visit to Indonesia. In my view, this visit will further foster our friendship, deepen our trust and values that will benefit both of our people.

We are recognized as the world’s largest democracies. India officially holds the title of the world’s most populous country, while Indonesia is the world’s fourth-largest country by population. Thus, cooperation between both countries will certainty bring benefits for the region.

Let us continue moving forward together, building an even stronger partnership for a more prosperous future for the people of Indonesia and India.
