Indonesia to Join National Development Bank

President Prabowo announces the Government’s decision to join the New Development Bank (NDB), during a meeting with NDB President Dilma Vana Rousseff, at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Tuesday (03/25).
President Prabowo Subianto Tuesday (03/25) announced that Indonesia will join the New Development Bank (NDB), as the country’s strategic measure to strengthen partnership in development with other developing countries and multilateral agency.
The announcement was made during a meeting with NDB President Dilma Vana Rousseff, at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta.
“Today, we have the honor to host Her Excellency Dilma Rousseff, the President of the New Development Bank (NDB) who also served as President of Brazil for 2011-2016 term, Minister of Energy, and Minister Chief of Staff in the cabinet of Lula da Silva from 2005 to 2010,” President Pabowo said in a joint press statement.
President Prabowo underscored that the meeting, which was conducted in amicable and productive manners, focused on short, medium, and long-term development goals of Indonesia. Moreover, the meeting also discussed partnership opportunities in various priority sectors.
The President went on to say that the NDB in that meeting has invited Indonesia to become its member. He added that the Indonesian Government decided to join NDB after considering thorough evaluation conducted by Ministry of Finance.
“The Indonesian Government has decided to join the New Development Bank and will comply with all procedures and requirements,” he said.
President Prabowo also expressed his hope that the NDB membership will boost the national development transformation.
In the meantime, NDB President Dilma Rousseff warmly welcomed Indonesia’s decision. According to her, Indonesia is a strategic country in the region and in international area which shares the same vision with NDB in supporting sustainable development among developing country.
“Indonesia is a very important country in the region and the world, and for the BRICS Bank. It is because we are developing countries in the emerging market. It is deemed important for us to search for an alliance like this,” she said.
Rousseff also delivered appreciation for Indonesia’s long and clear development planning. She added that Indonesia and NDB share similar priorities in investment, infrastructure, logistics, and roads, railways, seaport, and airport development, as well as digital connectivity and energy transition. She also lauded Indonesia’s biofuel achievements.
“Indonesia is a leading country in biofuel, like biodiesel with forty percent that I am very impressed of,” she said adding that NDB is a development agency that respects the sovereignty of its members and focuses on the needs and national priorities of each country.
