President Jokowi Opens the 13th IMSO

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo opens the 13th International Mathematics and Science Olympiada (IMSO) for elementary level featuring a theme “Smart, Skilled, and Creative in a Joyful Competition for Excellent”, at Allium Hotel, Tangerang, Banten, on Wednesday (9/11) evening.

In his remarks, President Jokowi admitted the he is very proud seeing the faces of the elementary students participating on the 13th IMSO. They are the children that would be the world’s prospective experts in mathematics and science.

“I believe if there are more propestive experts in math and science, the people in the world would be more advance because mathematics and science are the main foundation of a lot of progress and innovations,” the President said.

The President reminded the participants of IMSO that the essence of knowledge is beneficial for all people.

“Don’t just keep it in your head. Don’t use your intelligence for yourself and for your personal gain,” the President said.

The President admitted that IMSO is a competition to get medals. However, it is more important to have  broader perspective and knowledge after the olympiade.

“In IMSO, there are delegations from 22 countries that can share ideas, knowledge, as well as experiences. Thus, use IMSO as a media to get more knowledge, to share experience, to strengthen confidence, to strengthen sense of humanity, and to have a spirit of knowledge sharing amongst delegations,” the President further said while asking all participants to use IMSO as a positive competition that upholds sportivity.

Previously, Minister of Education and Culture Muhadjir Effendi, in his report, said that there are 22 countries and 601 delegations that participate the 2016 IMSO that will be held on 9-13 November 2016.

The participating countries are Brunei Darussalam, Bulgaria, China, Hongkong, Nepal, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, Srilanka, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia. (FID/OJI/ES) (MMB/YM/Naster)
