President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo on Monday (30/1) inaugurated Sambi traditional market on Tempursari Village, Sambi District, Boyolali Regency, Central Java Province.

In his remarks, President Jokowi hopes that traditional markets should be able to compete with super markets or malls.

“After this market is inaugurated, please let’s take care of it together. Let’s keep the market clean. Thus, there will be more visitors coming to the market,” the President said.

According to President Jokowi, traditional markets in Indonesia are commonly muddy, dirty, and has no parking spaces. However, many traditional markets that the Government has built have parking spaces so visitors can park their cars or motorcycles; thus giving convenience for visitors.

President Jokowi added that the Government would build traditional markets from Sabang until Merauke and it is targeted that in the next 5 years, at least 5,000 traditional markets can be built.

“This is a big target indeed. But we’ve set the target.  Otherwise, our traditional markets will not be able to compete with modern markets, supermarkets or hypermarkets. I don’t want it to happen,” the President said.

President Jokowi noted that although supermarket, minimarket, hypermarket use air conditioners, traditional markets actually do not need to have air conditioners installed.  Instead, the President said that as long as it is neat and clean and the visitors are greeted with a friendly smile, it will be enough.

“Consumers should indeed be treated like kings. Consumers anywhere,” the President said.

President Jokowi also reminded the traders to dress neatly just like during the inauguration of the market.

“Now, I can see all you dress neatly because I’m coming here,” the President said.

After giving his remarks, President Jokowi signed an inscription to mark the inauguration of the market. The President also symbolically handed in aprons to five traders in the market, including beef traders and chicken traders.

“By saying bismillahirrahmanirrahim, I declare the Pasar Sambi open,” the President said.

President Jokowi also toured around the market and talked to the traders there.

Joining the President on that occasion were Minister of State Secretary Pratikno, Minister of Trade Enggartiasto Lukita, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo, and Boyolali Regent Seno Samodro. (UN/OZI/ES) (EP/YM/Naster)
