The Government of the Republic of Indonesia through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the shootings at a mosque that killed five people, at the Centre Culturel Islamique du Quebec, Quebec City, Ottawa, Canada, on Sunday (29/1) local time. “Indonesia condemn the shooting incident at a mosque in Quebec City, on Sunday, 29 January 2017,” said a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia uploaded in its twitter account (@Portal_Kemlu_RI), Monday (30/1).

Indonesian Ambassador to Canada, Teuku Faizasyah, in Ottawa, said that he immediately contacted the police in Quebec to ensure the safety of Indonesian citizens who live in the area around the mosque. “So far, we have not obtained information regarding the identity of the victims. It is our hope that Indonesian citizens in Quebec are safe and sound,” the Ambassador said.

Based on the data in the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Ottawa, there are 27 Indonesian citizens who live in Quebec City. The Ambassador said that it takes a five-hour road trip from Ottawa to Quebec City. “I have been coordinating with the two Consulate Generals (KJRI) both in Vancouver and Toronto, primarily to improve communication with the Indonesian people to ensure their condition,” the Ambassador said.

Appeal of KBRI Ottawa

The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Ottawa has issued an appeal to Indonesian citizens in Canada following the shooting, as follow:

  1. Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia in Canada follow carefully the shooting incident at the Centre Culturel Islamique du Quebec, Quebec City, 29 January 2017, including the initial statement that police officers in the Province of Quebec have given on 30 January 2017.
  2. While waiting for information related to the handling and further details from the Government of Canada, Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia in Canada has appealed to all Indonesian citizens residing in Canada to enhance prudence in performing activities in places of worship.
  3. In the event the Indonesian citizens need information and assistance, please call 24-hour hotline of the nearest Indonesian Missions, as follow:
