Indonesia Wins First Gold at Asian Games
Indonesia taekwondoin Defia Rosmaniar produced the country’s first gold medal at the Asian Games, coming out on top in the women’s individual Poomsae on Sunday at the Jakarta Convention Center, Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) sports complex, before an audience of 1,000, including President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.
The victory came after the 23-year-old taekwondo fighter scored 8.690 points in the final, slightly higher than the 8.470 scored by Marjan Salahsouri of Iran.
In round 16th, Defia eliminated Wong Kai Yu from Hong Kong, while in the quarter-finals defeated Tuyet Van Chau from Vietnam. In the Semifinal, she outclassed Korean taekwondoin Jihye Yun.
In the meantime, President Joko Jokowi Widodo, who presented the gold medal to Defia, took to Twitter of congratulate her. Defia, Indonesian people are proud of you, the President tweeted.
Rosmaniars victory is expected to become a boost for Indonesia who has set a target of 16 gold medals at the Asian Games.
For the record, Korean martial art form Poomsae, which made its Games debut this year, is judged based on practitioners’ demonstration of offensive and defensive moves. South Korea, who have dominated the event at the Asian Games since its 1986 inclusion, have won two golds, one silver and one bronze in individual and team Poomsae events so far.
