Starting his working visit to Bandung, President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo on Sunday (10/3) inspected the construction site of the Nanjung Water Tunnel in Lagadar village, Margaasih district, Bandung regency, West Java province.

“The construction has long been planned since 15 years ago. Now we are working on this twin 230-meter long tunnel,” President Jokowi said.

The tunnel, the President continued, it is hoped to reduce floods in southern Bandung, especially in the areas of Dayeuhkolot, Baleendah, and Bojongsoang. “It will be completed at the end of this year, God’s willing,” he said, adding that the construction was funded by the Central Government.

In addition building the Nanjung Tunnel, President Jokowi said the Government is also working on a number of infrastructure projects to cope with flooding, such as the construction of a retention basin in Cieunteung Dayeuhkolot and Gedebage as well as a floodway in Citepus and Cisangkuy rivers.

According to the President, flood control in the southern Bandung area requires 182 hectares of land acquisition for retention basins. (FID/RAH/ES)
