President Jokowi Visits Australia’s Mount Ainslie to Learn More About Canberra’s Development

As part of his working visit in Australia, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo visited Mount Ainslie in the Australian Capital of Canberra to see the view of the city from its highest point and to observe how the city was designed and managed.

“I would like to see Canberra from Mount Ainslie to get an insight on how it was built and managed,” President Jokowi told reporters.

Mount Ainslie is a hill with an elevation of 843 meters located in the northeastern suburbs of Canberra. The Mount Ainslie Tourist Outlook, one of Canberra’s most popular tourist spot, offers excellent views and panoramic picture of the city’s buildings and beauty spots.

The planned city of Canberra itself was built back in 1913 and is now home to around 400,000 people.

“The urban planning (of Canberra) is impressive. Indonesia will learn and copy the model for the development of our new capital,” the President added.

Regarding Indonesia’s capital relocation, President Jokowi told reporters that the plan was already executed, starting from the urban design competition last year, feasibility study, and many others.

The President went on to say that the Government is currently waiting for the law to be issued by the House of Representatives (DPR) and once it is completed, the process will move to land clearing and construction of basic infrastructure.

The Indonesian Government last year decided to relocate Indonesia’s capital from Jakarta to two regencies in East Kalimantan province. (MAY/EN)
