IORA Member Countries’ Senior Officials Preparing Outcome Documents for Leader’s Summit

The meeting of senior officials of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) member countries which is the first agenda of the IORA Summit, has managed to prepare the outcome documents. Today, the results of the discussion will be conveyed at the Ministerial Summit.

The ministers will then report the resultsto the leaders during the Leaders’ Summit on Tuesday (7/3)

“The main agenda of today’s meetings is preparing outcome documents, which include the IORA Concord, the IORA Plan of Action which contains a number of action  plans  for the next four years, and the declaration on the prevention of and fight against terrorism and extremism violence,” said Director General of Asia, Pacific, and Africa of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Desra Percaya in a joint press briefing with IORA Secretary General K.V. Bhagirath at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Sunday (5/3).

The IORA Concord, Desra said, is the initiative of Indonesia’s chairmanship and has gained supports from all IORA member countries. He added that the senior official meeting also discussed technical aspects for the Ministerial Level Meeting and the Leader’s Summit, such as preparations for the signing of the outcome documents.

In the meantime, IORA Secretary General K.V. Bhagirath expressed his appreciation for the success of Indonesia’s chairmanship during the period of 2015-2017. “Indonesia’s initiative has managed to gather 21 member countries in the Leaders’ Summit is the first time in IORA’s 20-year of history and will become a game changer,” Bhagirath said.

Bhagirath also believes that the IORA Leader’s Summit will bring forward the cooperation among IORA members. He added that later on, the task of the IORA Secretaryis to implement agreements that have been made.

On Monday (6/3), Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno L.P. Marsudi is scheduled to open and preside over the ministerial meeting.

In the meantime, President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo is also slated to deliver his remarks regarding IORA cooperation towards a prosperous and sustainable future at the Business Summit adopting the theme “IORA: Building Partnership for Sustainable and Equitable Economic Growth”. (Dit Infomed Kemlu/ES) (EP/YM/Naster)
