With almost 70 percent or two-third of Indonesia’s territory is ocean, development in the maritime sector becomes one of the priorities of the administration of Joko Widodo – Jusuf Kalla, as stated in the Government’s visions and missions.

It is also predicted that in the future, Indonesia will depend more on the seas.

“The President’s promises will be materialized and I have been instructed to immediately oversee maritime infrastructures,” said Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan at the inauguration of an office of a fishery company PT Dua Putra Utama Makmur in Juwana, Pati, Central Java, on Wednesday (10/8).

The Minister also said that that the Government is building a sea toll along the coast of Sumatera so the ships can dock and transportation of goods could be easy, Luhut says.

The Government also pay more attention to the protection of maritime resources such as in Natuna and regions in Eastern Indonesia and will increase the number of maritime schools in the country.

In addition, Luhut added, the Government through the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries led by Susi Pudjiastuti has also issued regulations on illegal fishing in an effort to protect Indonesia’s maritime resources.

“Indonesia as a maritime country, as the global maritime fulcrum is evident, not only as a slogan but also in many concrete forms,” Luhut added.

On that occasion, the Minister also urged PT. Dua Putra Utama Makmur to pay more attention to the supply of maritime commodities, which are in this case micro, small, and medium enterprises.

“In my opinion, these micro, small, and medium enterprises play an important role. I hope President Director of PT. Dua Putra Utama can help their development. This is important,” Luhut said.

Luhut further said that the Government has also begun reforming the strategy of fishing activities in the country so that they can also help to develop the country’s industries in order to have more added values, for example by encouraging constructing of ships, fish processing and the production of animal feed made of fish done at home.

The Government also reminded that overfishing just like in the past should be avoided, Luhut said.

On that occasion, Luhut also invited PT. Dua Putra Utama Makmur, Tbk to also make investment to develop fish markets and fish auction places in Natuna.  Currently, the Government has been trying to provide electricity with gas to supply electricity so cold storage is available.

Luhut also reminded businessmen behind PT. Dua Putra Utama Makmur, Tbk to stay focused and disciplined.

“Don’t forget to always be disciplined, to keep the fighting spirit, to abide by the law and to always practise effective management in order to be successful,” Luhut said, adding that the Government promises to help the development of maritime and fisheries industries.

Nevertheless, Luhut hopes that those industries would also involve micro, small, and medium enterprises and PT. Dua Putra Utama Makmur can stimulate Pati to become the center of fish industries in Indonesia.

Also attending the inauguration were Chief of Central Java Regional Police, Pati Regent, Main Commisioner and President Director of PT Dua Putra Utama Makmur, Tbk.  (RMI/DID/OJI/ES)(EP/YM/Naster)
