During the APEC Economic Leaders’ Informal Dialog and Working Lunch with the theme “Sustainability, Climate and Just Energy Transitions” held at the Moscone Convention Center, San Francisco, United States, on Thursday (11/16), President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo addressed three important matters that must be the focus of APEC cooperation on the issue of climate change.

First, President Jokowi said that APEC must realize a just energy transition, equal collaboration, and mutual benefit which in line with the Bangkok Document on BCG Economy and the Principles of a Just Energy Transition.

“In this regard, Indonesia has launched a collaboration to develop the EV ecosystem between the government, state-owned companies, and the private sector. This year ASEAN has also agreed to a commitment to developing a regional EV ecosystem,” the President said.

Second, the President said that APEC must ensure economic access to affordable, sustainable, and modern green technology, adding that this could be done through technology transfer, capacity building and access to critical minerals.

“APEC must promote cooperation that ensures a smooth supply chain, including investment in developing critical minerals. Indonesia is planning to establish investment cooperation in managing nickel reserves for the EV battery ecosystem to ensure clean energy is available to all in accordance with the principle of ‘no one left behind’,” the President said.

Third, the President added that APEC must also encourage innovative financing mechanisms through synergies and partnerships involving private participation and support from international financial institutions.

“The JETP (Just Energy Transition Partnership) and Energy Transition Mechanism schemes can be models that can be expanded in scope,” he remarked. (BPMI/AIT) (EST/EP)
