President Jokowi Congratulates Newly Inaugurated Malaysian Prime Minister

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Thursday (11/24) congratulated Anwar Ibrahim who had been elected as the new Prime Minister of Malaysia via a phone call from the Bogor Presidential Palace.

“On behalf of the Government and the Indonesian people, I’d like to congratulate His Excellency for being appointed as the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia,” the President said.

According to the President, Anwar Ibrahim is a well-known figure in Indonesia and is respected by the Indonesian people.

The President also expressed belief that Indonesia and Malaysia will strengthen good relations under the leadership of PM Anwar Ibrahim.

“I hope we can meet in the near future to discuss efforts to strengthen our bilateral relations, be it the economy, border issues, or citizen protection services,” he said.

On that occasion, PM Anwar Ibrahim expressed appreciation for President Jokowi’s congratulatory messages.

“Thank you. I consider it an honor as the earliest [leader] to make a call. This shows that I will remain a true friend of Indonesia,” said PM Anwar, while expressing hope that the two countries’ trade, investment, culture, and friendly relations can constantly improve.

“I hope we can enhance our relations [in every sector],” he said.

In addition, President Jokowi also expressed hope that Allah SWT would ease any hardship and give PM Anwar Ibrahim strength in leading Malaysia.
