President Jokowi Expects Japan Remains ASEAN Major Partner to Advance Economy

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said that Japan is one of ASEAN’s first strategic partners and dialogue partners, which has contributed a lot to ASEAN.

“I hope Japan remains a major partner of ASEAN in promoting mutually beneficial economic openness,” President Jokowi said in his speech at the 20th ASEAN-JAPAN Summit at the Philippines International Convention Center (PICC), Manila, the Philippines, Monday (13/11) evening.

To that end, the President stressed that the negotiation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) should be immediately resolved.

On the occasion, President Jokowi also expressed his appreciation for Japan’s contribution to the ASEAN Humanitarian Assistance (AHA) Center, which has moved to help restore Marawi City, the Philippines and help overcome the humanitarian crisis in Rakhine State, Myanmar.

Therefore, the President encouraged the organization to continue to be strengthened including the availability of its resources and hoped Japan would continue to provide support for the AHA Center.

Regarding the developments on the Korean Peninsula, President Jokowi also mentioned the importance of Japan’s role in maintaining stability and security in order to avoid war.

“For this reason, I hope Japan’s role in continuing the opening of the window for a peaceful solution,” President Jokowi concluded. (SM/ES) (MUR/YM/Naster).
