President Jokowi Receives Courtesy Call from U.S. Congress Members

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Wednesday (4/12) received courtesy call from members of the U.S. Congress at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta.

On that occasion, the delegates reinforced the United States’ commitment to continue strengthening strategic partnership between Indonesia and the United States.

“They (the delegates) noticed that Indonesia plays an important role as a partner in the region and stated that Indonesia is shining now,” Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi said after the meeting.

According to Retno, the delegates also expressed their appreciation to Indonesia for the success during last year’s G20 Presidency while underscoring that they will support for the Indonesia’s ASEAN Chairmanship this year.

In addition, the Minister went on to say that President Jokowi reinforced Indonesia’s commitment to climate change and environmental issues, while underscoring that one of Indonesia’s achievements related to both issues is the reduction of forest fires by more than 80 percent.

The President also expressed hope for the support from the United States on several issues including the extension of the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) facility and global market access.

“President Jokowi expressed hope that Indonesia can be a part of global supply chain. The President also expressed hope for the support from the United States on energy transition,” Retno said.

Furthermore, the delegates were slated to visit the Nusantara Capital. (BPMI/AIT) (AP/LW)
