President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has expressed condolences over the passing of Sultan of Oman Qaboos bin Said, who passed away at the age of 79 in Muscat, Oman, on Friday (10/1), after battling with cancer,

“Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun (rest in peace), the Indonesian Government and Indonesian people would like to express our deep condolences for the demise of Sultan Qaboos bin Said,” President Jokowi wrote on his Twitter account @jokowi.

According to President Jokowi, Sultan Qaboos was a visionary leader who had transformed Oman to be a modern and peaceful country.

Sultan Qaboos dominated the political life of Oman over a reign of almost 50 years, the longest, by far, of any ruler in the Arab world. He did not have any successor and never appointed any name to replace him.

Oman then named cousin of the late Sultan Qaboos, Haitham bin Tariq who served as Oman’s Minister of Heritage and Culture, as the new ruler of the country. (ES)
