Press Statement (Doorstop) by Cabinet Secretary and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs After Attending BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Monday, July 7, 2025
Cabinet Secretary of the Republic of Indonesia (Teddy Indra Wijaya)
Well, everyone, yesterday and today, Sunday, July 6 and Monday, July 7, 2025, President Prabowo Subianto attended BRICS Summit. Today is the second day and it’s been concluded.
This marks a new milestone that Indonesia has officially participated in the BRICS Summit for the first time, and this was initiated by the President. Then, in the same year, we were accepted. Then, all BRICS member countries supported us, and finally, in the same year, Indonesia officially became a full member of BRICS.
Initially, BRICS consisted of 5 countries. Then, it expanded where Indonesia became the 10th official member out of 11. Saudi Arabia hasn’t yet officially joined. Mr. President thinks about how Indonesia collaborates and joins as many organizations as possible. So, joining BRICS is one of the efforts.
Yesterday and today, he spoke before many heads of state. There were officially 28 countries and Heads of State/Government. So, there were 10 BRICS members, 10 partner countries, and 8 guests. Even, there are so many (countries) lining up to join BRICS. This shows that Indonesia is increasingly being heard, acknowledged, respected, and needed on the global stage.
So, out of 10 member countries of BRICS, almost 50 percent is the world’s population where their GDP is around 35 percent of the global GDP. So, that’s it. The Vice Minister will provide more technical details later and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will release further details. Well, Please [Mr. Vice Minister].
Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia (Arrmanatha Nasir)
Thank you, Cabinet Secretary. To add to what the Cabinet Secretary has said earlier, today’s discussion was on the environment and global health. Mr. President stated that Indonesia is highly affected by the impacts of climate change and expressed Indonesia’s commitment to combating climate change and, in particular, our efforts to implement the energy transition. Mr. President also expressed his commitment to continuing to assist the WHO (World Health Organization) in addressing global health issues. Indonesia continues to support initiatives, both in the context of TB (tuberculosis) and malaria.
Today’s focus was primarily on the environment. Many countries expressed their commitments to addressing climate change and preparing for COP 30, which will be held this October.
Cabinet Secretary of the Republic of Indonesia (Teddy Indra Wijaya)
Okay, I think that’s all. See you in Brasilia. Okay, everyone, thank you all.
