Paris 2024 Olympics: US Tops Medal Tally, Indonesia Finishes 39th
Paris closed the 2024 Olympics with the closing ceremony at the Stade de France on Sunday (08/11). During the Games, Indonesian contingents finished 39th with two gold medals and one bronze medal. Among ASEAN countries, Indonesia ranked second behind the Philippines, which bagged two gold medals and two silver medals.
The United States finished at the top of the medal tally with 126 medals – 40 gold, 44 silver, and 42 bronze. Meanwhile, China secured second place with 91 medals – 40 gold, 27 silver, and 24 bronze.
Indonesia’s first gold was won by speed climber Veddriq Leonardo in the men’s speed climbing final while weightlifter Rizki Juniansyah won the 73-kilogram category and brought home the second gold. The bronze medal, which also became the first Paris Olympics medal for Indonesia, was won by badminton player Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in the women’s singles badminton.
With two gold medals, achievement of the Indonesian contingents matches the gold medals secured in the Barcelona 1992 Olympics 32 years ago. In the Barcelona Olympics, Alan Budikusuma and Susi Susanti won gold medals in men’s singles and women’s singles badminton, respectively. In total, Indonesian athletes have won a total of 40 medals (10 gold, 14 silver, 16 bronze) since the Seoul 1988 Olympics.
