President Prabowo Subianto has asserted that narcotics represent one of the most significant threats to the nation’s future and must be confronted through comprehensive and relentless efforts.
The President delivered the statement in his remarks at the destruction of 214.84 tons of seized drug, valued at Rp29.37 trillion held in the first year of his administration at Bhayangkara Field of the National Police Headquarters in Jakarta, Wednesday (10/29).
“If preventive efforts fail, authorities proceed with confiscation and palce suspects under arrest. The seized drugs could potentially be used by 629 million individuals, more than twice the current population of Indonesia,” said the President.
The President also underscored that drug trafficking has evolved into a global issue, now utilizing increasingly sophisticated methods.
He also urged for the intensification of drug eradication efforts through enhanced synergy among all law enforcement agencies, government institutions, and active public participation.
“Therefore, this challenge demands collaboration and teamwork. I extend my congratulations to the Police and the National Narcotics Agency (BNN). However, I urge the development of closer cooperation with other institutions, including the Customs Office, the Prosecutor’s Office, the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), intelligence entities, and regional governments,” he added.
The Head of State further stressed that the drug problem constitutes a grave threat that could impede Indonesia’s goal of becoming a developed country.
Therefore, the President emphasized the importance of a balance between firm law enforcement and effective rehabilitation efforts.
“There are ongoing rehabilitation measures; yet, this remains an ongoing responsibility. Rehabilitation must be more thorough and effective. I thank all institutions that have implemented such rehabilitation efforts,” said the President.
In addition to law enforcement, the President emphasized that prevention must begin early through educational institutions and youth activities.
“The goal is unattainable without collective action across all educational institutions, including religious education, as well as elementary, junior high, senior high schools and universities. Therefore, scout programs and sports hold significant importance, and all organizational initiatives are essential for nurturing youth responsiveness,” he said.
Furthermore, the President also reiterated the immense journey and challenges in drugs eradication.
“Congratulations, you have transformed 228 drug villages into 118 drug-free villages. Keep up these efforts. I see the police are now more sensitive to the demands of the nation and state,” he said. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat) (JAS/EP)
