President Prabowo Subianto was warmly welcomed by Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney, at the West Block, Parliament Hill, Wednesday (09/24) during his official visit to the country.

In his remarks, PM Carney said that President Prabowo’s visit marked a historic moment that represented a new step in Indonesia and Canada relations.

“President Prabowo, thank you for honouring us with your visit to Canada today. It is a pleasure for us to welcome you and your delegation,” said PM Carney in his speech.

He emphasized that amid the disruption of the global trade system, Canada views Indonesia as a strategic partner to build economic strength and deepen trade cooperation. Moreover, PM Carney quoted President Prabowo’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly, which he described as powerful and inspiring.

“We are proud to build relations with those who face new challenges with hope and optimism based on a strong belief in the solidarity of all people,” he said.

PM Carney underscored that the signing of the Indonesia-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (ICA CEPA) is Canada’s first bilateral trade agreement with an ASEAN country. The Prime Minister expressed belief that this agreement will bring great benefits to both countries.

“This is the right agreement, at the right time, with the right partner. It is our biggest export market in Southeast Asia,” he said.

In addition to trade, PM Carney also mentioned the agreement between the two countries to strengthen cooperation in defense and security for regional peace and stability. Closing his remarks, PM Carney said Canada shares the same mission of building a stronger economy both domestically and globally.

“I will quote your statement yesterday, your commitment to a multilateral order where peace, prosperity, and progress are not just privileges of a few but the rights of all,” he remarked. (BPMI) (EST/LW)
