Govt to Lure Millennials to Join Cooperatives
In a bid to make the most of the demographic bonus and to anticipate Industrial Revolution 4.0, Indonesian Ministry of Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises will encourage the millennials to be actively involved in cooperatives.
Cooperatives should be run by young, productive, and creative people. Unfortunately, they seem to be less interested in joining cooperatives, Acting Deputy to Minister Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises for Human Resources Development Nuri Nuryanto said in a thematic forum event of the Coordinating Agency for Community Relations (Bakohumas) at Holiday Inn Hotel, Bandung, West Java, Thursday (18/10).
According to Nuri, many millennials are not interested to join cooperatives because they do not understand yet what cooperative really is. In fact, he continued, there are only two legal business entities in Indonesia, namely Limited Liability Company (PT) and Cooperatives and both of them are equal before the law.
Nuri added cooperative also could be run in technology field, which is favorite among the millennials. He cited the example of the popular ride-hailing app Go-Jek, which relies on the economy sharing scheme in which Go-Jek drivers acts as partner to Go-Jek, not as employees.
In cooperative, Nuri continued, its members are also the owners because cooperative does not belong to its management. The consequences, he added, all of the members have the equal right to express their opinions.
On the occasion, the Ministry is also launching a program to reform cooperative. The program consists of three steps, namely reorientation, rehabilitation and development of cooperatives.
Reorientation step is done by re-orienting cooperatives to quality, instead of quantity, meaning that cooperatives must be established by people who understand them. Meanwhile, rehabilitation is carried out by updating the data in which inactive cooperatives will be disbanded. As for the development step, cooperatives are expected to develop like other business entities, such as by being listed at the Indonesia Stock Exchange. (RSF/MIT/ES) (GWH/EP/Naster)
