Press Statement of President of the Republic of Indonesia Regarding Resignation of Special Envoy of the President for Interfaith Harmony and Development of Religious Facilities, Miftah Maulana Habiburrahman at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta Special Region Province, December 6, 2024
President of the Republic of Indonesia (Prabowo Subianto):
I have not yet seen it myself, but I received a report that he has officially resigned. In my view, it is an act of responsibility, dealing with the consequences. He has acknowledged his mistake, taken accountability, and decided to step down. Such a gesture of integrity deserves our respect.
I know him personally. Perhaps, due to his extensive interactions and sermons in grassroot communities, his intentions were not malicious or offensive. Nevertheless, he misspoke. He has recognized this error, taken responsibility, and resigned. His decision is straightforward and honorable.
In Indonesia, it is uncommon for someone to admit fault, take responsibility, and voluntarily resign. Such actions should be appreciated. He is fully aware of his mistake and acts accordingly.
Journalist:
Will a replacement be appointed, Mr. President?
President of the Republic of Indonesia (Prabowo Subianto):
Yes, we will look into this and identify a suitable person for replacement.
Journalist:
Sir, many officials have yet to submit their LHKPN (State Officials Wealth Report).
President of the Republic of Indonesia (Prabowo Subianto):
Their reports will be submitted.
Journalist:
The House of Representatives (DPR) has proposed a certification program for preachers. What is the Government’s stance on this?
President of the Republic of Indonesia (Prabowo Subianto):
We will seek insights from those well-versed in this issue, such as the Indonesian Ulema Council, religious organizations, and other relevant groups; we will ask for their input.
Ok, thank you.
Journalist:
Could you provide an update on the 12% VAT, Mr. President?
President of the Republic of Indonesia (Prabowo Subianto):
As previously explained, VAT is governed by law. We will implement it selectively, focusing solely on luxury goods. We remain committed to protecting essential goods and the general public. Since late 2023, the Government has stopped collecting taxes that could burden lower-income individuals, ensuring that tax policies support and assist the underprivileged. Any adjustments will target luxury goods only.
