President Prabowo, PM Trudeau Agree on Indonesia-Canada Strategic Cooperation

President Prabowo Subianto held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada on the sidelines of the APEC Summit at the Lima Convention Center (LCC), Peru, Friday (11/15). In the meeting, the two leaders affirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation between the two countries, including through strengthening trade and collaboration in strategic sectors.

President Prabowo began the meeting by expressing his appreciation for the good relations that Indonesia and Canada have established. Currently, the two countries have also concluded negotiations on the Indonesia-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (ICA-CEPA).

“Canada has a very good relationship with Indonesia for decades. We want to strengthen this relationship. As a means to achieve that goal, we have concluded the CEPA,” said President Prabowo.

President Prabowo also highlighted areas of cooperation that can be further developed by the two countries, starting from fisheries, manufacturing, to renewable energy.

“Indonesia is very ambitious. We have many energy resources besides fossil fuels,” said President Prabowo.

In his statements, President Prabowo also recalled his good relationship with PM Trudeau’s late father, Pierre Trudeau. He expressed his hope that their good relationship will continue in the future.

“I really admire your father. I hope this good relationship will last forever,” said President Prabowo.

Responding to President Prabowo’s statements, PM Trudeau also praised President Prabowo’s leadership. He appreciated Indonesia’s contribution in tackling various global challenges.

“Congratulations on your extraordinary leadership in the last few months. Indonesia has taken on many big challenges in a very positive way,” said PM Trudeau.

PM Trudeau also announced the good news about the signing of a free trade agreement between Indonesia and Canada. He added that the agreement will provide many benefits for Indonesia and Canada.

“This is good news for our economy, our growth, our prosperity, our workers, and our business communities,” said PM Trudeau.

In addition to strengthening trade relations, PM Trudeau also highlighted various potential collaborations, including collaborations in the critical mineral processing, education, energy, and digital technology sectors. He also announced the plans to lead Canada’s largest trade mission to Indonesia in the near future.
