President Prabowo Subianto on Sunday (07/13) met with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, at the European Union Headquarters, Berlaymont Building, Brussels, Belgium.

The meeting marked a strategic milestone in strengthening and expanding the partnership between Indonesia and the European Union across various key sectors.

President Prabowo arrived at Berlaymont Building around 12:30 p.m. local time, and was warmly welcomed by President Ursula von der Leyen. The two leaders posed for a photo before walking side by side to the meeting room, accompanied by officials from both delegations.

The meeting took place on the 13th floor of the Berlaymont Building. President Prabowo was accompanied by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Trade Budi Santoso, Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Rosan Roeslani, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, and Ambassador of Indonesia to Belgium Andri Hadi.

The two leaders discussed accelerating the completion of the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA), a comprehensive economic partnership that has entered its 19th round of negotiations. President Prabowo expressed appreciation for the warm reception and announced a major breakthrough.

“Today we have reached a breakthrough. After 10 years of negotiations, we have agreed on a comprehensive economic partnership agreement, essentially a free trade agreement. We have reached many agreements that accommodate the economic interests of both sides and are mutually beneficial,” the President said at a joint press conference.

In the meantime, President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the outcome and expressed confidence in a stronger future of the EU–Indonesia partnership. She also emphasized the shared values and aspirations between the two.

“We are both vibrant and diverse democracies. Indonesia’s national motto is Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity), and one of the European Union’s core principles is United in Diversity. Thus, we truly share the same values and ambitions,” she said.

The meeting in Brussels marked an important milestone in expanding market access and strengthening strategic cooperation between Indonesia and the European Union across various sectors.
