President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen expressed a strong commitment to deepening the strategic partnership between the European Union and Indonesia through agreements spanning three key areas of cooperation.

The statement was delivered during a joint press conference with President Prabowo Subianto held in the Media Room of the European Union Headquarters, Berlaymont Building, Brussels, Belgium, Sunday (07/13).

In the trade sector, President von der Leyen announced that a political agreement had been reached on the Indonesia–European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA), which reached a major milestone after more than a decade of negotiations.

“Together, we are sending a strong message about the importance of a long-term, predictable partnership. One built on trust, reciprocity, transparency, and shared values. This new trade agreement will create significant opportunities for both our nations,” President von der Leyen stated.

“Therefore, this agreement comes at a very timely moment. It will open new markets and create greater opportunities across key sectors ranging from industry and business to agriculture, automotive, and services, which will all benefit significantly.” she added.

The second focus of the leaders’ discussions centered on geopolitics and security.

President von der Leyen addressed an initiative to elevate Indonesia–European Union relations to the level of a strategic partnership.

“This signifies a long-term commitment grounded in trust, reciprocity, and mutual benefit. It will complement the important work we are already advancing together through the EU–ASEAN partnership,” she said.

The third pillar of strengthened cooperation focuses on people-to-people connectivity.

President von der Leyen announced a new cascade visa policy aimed at easing access for Indonesian citizens traveling to the Schengen Area.

“Starting now, Indonesian citizens visiting the European Union for a second time will be eligible for a multi-entry Schengen visa. This will facilitate travel, investment, education, and personal ties. In essence, we are building bridges between our peoples,” President von der Leyen remarked.
